The 2020 BMW X3 xDrive30e PHEV Sports Activity Vehicle

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – November 4, 2019…Today, BMW announces the newest Plug-In Hybrid member of the X family of Sports Activity Vehicles: the X3 xDrive30e. This is the first time a PHEV model has been available in the X3 line. Combining a 2.0-liter TwinPower turbocharged gasoline engine with BMW’s eDrive technology featuring an electric motor and 12 kWh high-voltage battery, the new X3 PHEV achieves an estimated EPA 60 MPGe and offers up to 18 miles of emissions-free electric driving.

The X3 xDrive30e is built at Plant Spartanburg, South Carolina, BMW Group’s largest global production plant. In mid-2019, Plant Spartanburg more than doubled its production capacity for the fourth-generation high-voltage batteries used in the X3 and upcoming X5 PHEV models.

BMW eDrive Powertrain

A 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo engine developing 181 hp @ 4,000 – 6,500 rpm and 258 lb.-ft. of torque @ 1,450 – 3,500 rpm is complemented by an electric traction motor, mounted within the transmission housing, developing 107 hp at 3,140 rpm and 77 lb.-ft. of torque @ 0 – 3,170 rpm. The combined power output is 288 hp and 310 lb.-ft. of torque.

A high-voltage 34 Ah / 12 kWh gross (9.09 kWh net) lithium-ion battery module located underneath the rear seats provides the storage capacity for electric-only and hybrid-mode driving. The PHEV variant of the X3 offers only 1.5 less cubic feet of volume behind the rear seats due to the careful packaging of the battery and fuel tank.

In the HYBRID driving mode, the new X3 xDrive30e can operate at speeds up to 68 mph on electric power alone. Emissions-free and fuel-free ELECTRIC mode allows driving at up to 84 mph. The standard Active Protection for Pedestrians features an exterior speaker system to generate an unmistakable sound created specifically for electrified BMWs when operating in electric-only mode at speeds up to 20 mph.

Driver Assistance Systems

The new X3 xDrive30e offers standard and optional systems to enhance both comfort and safety. Standard are the Active Guard Package with Daytime Pedestrian Detection and Frontal Collision warning with City Collision mitigation and the Active Protection Package with Automatic front seat belt tensioning, Automatic closing of windows and moonroof, Fatigue and Focus alert and Post-crash braking.

The optional Driving Assistance Package includes Lane Departure Warning and Active Blind Spot Detection systems, which help the driver to guide the car back onto the correct path with a steering input. The Driving Assistant’s functions also include Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, thereby reducing the risk of a collision when reversing into roads that are obstructed from the driver’s view.

The optional Driving Assistant Plus Package offers the full complement of advanced assistance systems including Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Traffic Jam Assistant, Active Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision avoidance, Evasion Aid and Front Cross-Traffic Alert.

BMW iDrive 7

The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional features iDrive 7, a 12.3-inch high-resolution digital instrument cluster display and a 10.25-inch digital touch screen Control Display with Navigation, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and wireless Apple CarPlay compatibility. This latest generation of BMW iDrive delivers intuitive multimodal interaction between driver and vehicle using a combination of voice, touch screen or haptic iDrive rotary controller or steering wheel controls.
