Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, May 1, 2000... When BMW set out to put its own
signature on the Sport Utility Vehicle phenomenon, the world sat up and took
notice. Here was a renowned and respected maker of motor cars, with a long and
illustrious history of high-quality automobiles that always put an accent on
sportiness and driving pleasure, while cultivating practicality, quality,
durability and fine design at the same time. Was all this compatible with that
which in recent years had become so fashionable, the tall and rugged-looking
SUV with brawn and bad-road - even offroad - capability?

Well, as they say, "the rest is history." And though the X5's history is still
relatively short at this writing, it's already clear that BMW did indeed manage
to bring together in one vehicle much of the best of these two seemingly
disparate vehicular concepts. One doesn't have to take BMW's word for it:

Motor Trend, April 2000, comparing the X5 to the Mercedes ML 430 and Land Rover
Discovery Series II: "Once you've spent time behind all of their wheels,
there's no mistaking each SUV's unique personalities and different reasons for
being. The X5 is every bit the thoroughbred sport-themed machine you'd expect
from BMW....The offroad BMW brings a new dimension to the sport/utility scene:
a vehicle that delivers plenty of versatility, utility, and all-weather
capability, without sacrificing one iota of driving excitement."

Road & Track, April 2000: "Though not cheap...the Munich-engineered,
Spartanburg, South Carolina-built X5 is the most enthusiast-friendly sport ute,
er, Sport Activity Vehicle yet."

AutoWeek, January 10, 2000: "Yes, we were (are) skeptical about a BMW-ute, but
the X5 is incredibly good."

What all this means, succinctly, is that BMW indeed achieved the goals it set
for the X5, and the experts recognize the achievement. Now, just a few months
after introduction of the first X5 model, BMW adds a second model to expand the
Sports Activity Vehicle's already strong appeal.
