WOODCLIFF LAKE NJ, FEBRUARY 8, 1999...At the company's Supervisory Board
meeting held Friday, February 5, BMW AG named Dr. Henrich Heitmann to its
board of management. Heitmann will be responsible for the BMW group's
worldwide sales.
Heitmann, 57, is currently Chairman and CEO of BMW (US) Holding Corp.
overseeing the sales and marketing activities of the BMW group in North,
Central and South America. A successor for Heitmann in the Americas has not
yet been named.
The Supervisory Board also appointed Professor Dr.-Ing. Joachim Milberg (55),
currently responsible on the Board for "Engineering and Production" as the new
Chairman of the Board. Carl-Peter Forster (44) and Dr. Wolfgang Ziebart (49)
also received Board appointments. Forster, who is currently head of BMW South
Africa, will be taking over "Engineering and Production." Ziebart, until
recently responsible for the launch of the new 3 Series at BMW, will take over
responsibility for the "Development" Division.
The full breadth of changes to the BMW AG Board of Management reaffirms the
company's commitment to remain strong and independent. "With the
consolidation within the automotive industry currently underway, the integrity
of brands are threatened," commented Heitmann. "Careful brand management has
been and will continue to be critical to our long-term success worldwide. We
have the size and resources to profitably strengthen our brands, yet remain
agile enough to provide clear marque differentiation."
BMW entered the North American market in 1975. Since then, the company has
grown to include marketing, sales and financial service organizations in the
United States and Canada; a South Carolina manufacturing operation; a design
firm in California; a technology office in Silicon Valley; and various other
BMW operations throughout the U.S. and Canada. BMW is represented in North
America through a network of more than 375 automobile and 190 motorcycle
retailers in the United States and Canada. BMW (US) Holding Corp., the group's
North American headquarters, is located in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey.
