GETTING THE JUMP ON 2002, BMW UNVEILS ITS LATEST STARS.

Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey...Some things are too good to keep under wraps, so
BMW is getting an early start on 2002. And it's appropriate that the first of
BMW's '02 models to be uncovered is the company's "naked bike"-the completely
revised R 1150 R Roadster. While some might consider it to be the company's
first entry into this burgeoning class, the fact is that while other makers
have recently rediscovered this style of motorcycle, BMW never abandoned it.
Even so, this bike represents more than a mere update of its predecessor, the R
1100 R. First shown at the INTERMOT show in Munich last year, the 1150 R is a
complete rethinking of the "standard" motorcycle. Front the tip of its sharply
raked front fender to its neatly integrated tail light, this new bike is
sportier, more powerful, better-equipped and even more sophisticated than the
previous Roadster.

And unlike the typical "naked" bike, the new R 1150 R is more than an existing
sportbike simply stripped of its bodywork. As such, the new Roadster won't be
confused with the emperor's new clothes. This is an entirely rethought
motorcycle, one that combines BMW's latest 1130cc/6-speed Boxer drivetrain with
a reworked Telelever, sportier ergonomics and freshly sculpted, cutting-edge
styling.

More importantly, the new Roadster is also the first to offer BMW's new EVO
(evolution) front braking system and optional Integral ABS. A significant
enhancement of BMW's conventional front disc brakes, the EVO brake system
features larger diameter brake rotors, plus four-piston calipers with
different-diameter pistons and recalibrated hydraulic ratios. The EVO design
lowers brake effort at the lever and at the same time provides more balanced
brake pad wear.
The R 1150 R's optional Integral ABS combines the benefits of ABS with
power-assisted, integrated brakes. Unlike conventional hydromechanically linked
systems, this new brake design uses both hydraulic pressure and electronic
control to provide optimal braking with either the hand lever or foot pedal. In
addition, adaptive programming circuitry allows it to compensate for changing
fuel load or the addition of luggage or a passenger.

Overall, the combination of EVO front brakes and Integral ABS provides even
lower effort, quicker response, lighter weight and better braking distribution
than any other system, including BMW's own, much-lauded ABS II. The new setup
not only lowers lever effort and response time, but it also reduces overall
weight of the ABS by 20 percent.

These same benefits extend to the new R 1150 RT, which uses the
R 1150 R driveline and includes BMW's new integral ABS as standard equipment.
Together with the camshafts from the high-performance R 1100 S, the RT's
traditional twin exhaust boosts horsepower and torque, giving it a maximum of
95 bhp and 74 lb.-ft.-the most ever offered by any RT. A new fairing provides
the same exemplary wind protection for both riders, and adds a reshaped
headlamp with dual integrated foglights. Wider, 17-inch wheels and tires (also
from the R 1100 S) further reduce unsprung weight and improve handling
response.

The third early arrival, the 2002 K 1200 RS also boasts a fresh face, courtesy
of a modified upper fairing with asymmetrical air intakes, capped by a new
windshield and revised mirror stalks. Integral ABS boosts the four's braking
ability from its already astonishing level, while its lighter weight
componentry reduces unsprung weight to improve handling. And in a welcome, but
perhaps unexpected, touch of rider convenience, the four-cylinder RS borrows
cruise control from its luxury touring stablemate-another first in the
sport-touring class.
