The new BMW R1200 R

The new R1200 R received its world premier on 7 July at the BMW Motorrad Biker Meeting in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and is a naked roadster of immense versatility, designed for pure riding pleasure. Although clearly more sporty than the predecessor model, the new R1200 R has no pretensions to compete with the 163 hp K1200 R - although it is the most powerful Boxer roadster of all time.

BMW Motorrad's R1150 R has enjoyed considerable success since its launch in
2001, with almost 60,000 sales worldwide. And while this classic roadster has
remained an important part of the current model line-up, all other R Series
models - such as the GS, RT, ST and S - have benefited from the latest 'new
generation' advanced engine and chassis technology.

The new R1200 R received its world premier on 7 July at the BMW Motorrad Biker
Meeting in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and is a naked roadster of immense
versatility, designed for pure riding pleasure. Although clearly more sporty
than the predecessor model, the new R1200 R has no pretensions to compete with
the 163 hp K1200 R - although it is the most powerful Boxer roadster of all
time.

While the 1150cc version sported an ample 85 hp, the new 1200 outputs 109 hp -
a 28 per cent increase in power. The torque figure is equally impressive: 115
Nm at 6,000 rpm is 17 per cent more than the 1150 offered. Combine this with a
weight reduction of 20 kilos over the predecessor and it's clear to see what a
huge leap this 198 kg roadster has made in performance terms alone.

Although it will appeal to riders who like to experience the pleasures of
'classic' motorcycling, the new R is designed to provide a responsive, dynamic
and agile ride. Unlike its competitors, BMW's new 'classic' is bristling with
modern technology and doesn't suffer from any of the cost-cutting measures
often associated with this class, such as unwieldy chassis design, poor
performing brakes (with no ABS option), no real touring capability, lower level
technology and relatively high weight.

The uniqueness of the Boxer engine in terms of design and engine
characteristics, combined with the tried and tested Telelever and Paralever
suspension system offers riders impeccable handling and road-holding qualities
- even on the bumpiest of surfaces. Furthermore, a comprehensive range of
modern and innovative safety equipment will be available for the R, such as
ABS, a new ASC automatic stability control system, tyre pressure monitoring and
ESA (electronic suspension adjustment).

Combine this with a wide range of options and accessories that include two
sizes of windshield, a pannier system, top-box, baggage rack, and lower or
higher dual seat, and prospective customers will have the best of all worlds -
a classic BMW equipped for any challenge, including touring.

Available in a choice of Night Black non-metallic, Crystal Grey metallic and
Granite Grey metallic colours, the new R1200 R will be available from BMW
Motorrad dealers in mid-September, priced at just £8,295 on the road. A
detailed press kit is available on request.

CO2 emission information.

The values for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and energy consumption shown were determined in a standardised test cycle according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version currently applicable. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers transmission (automatic or manual) and the different wheels and tyres available on the selected model and may vary during the configuration.

The values of the vehicles labelled with (*), are already based on the test cycle according to the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to allow a comparison between vehicles. More information on the transition from NEDC to WLTP test procedures can be found here.

These figures are intended for comparison purposes and may not be representative of what a user achieves under usual driving conditions. For plug-in hybrid vehicles and battery electric vehicles the figures have been obtained using a combination of battery power and petrol fuel after the battery had been fully charged. Plug-in hybrid vehicles and battery electric vehicles require mains electricity for charging. The CO2 emissions labels are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the Passenger Car (Fuel consumption and CO2 Emissions Information) Regulations 2001, as amended. They are based on the fuel consumption, CO2 values and energy consumptions according to the NEDC cycle.

A guide on fuel economy and CO2 emissions which contains data for all new passenger car models is available at any point of sale free of charge. For further information you can also visit this link.
