A motorcycle concept that is as legendary as it is sophisticated will celebrate its anniversary in 2020: The BMW GS models are turning 40.
Rotorua, New Zealand. Here in Rotorua, among the natural thermal springs, the teams have all arrived, the bikes are waiting, tents have been pitched, riding kit unpacked and everyone is ready for the start of the seventh BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy.

Right on time for the nationwide start of the season on 17 March 2018, BMW Motorrad was once again pleased to receive numerous distinctions at the annual readers' vote held by the magazine MOTORRAD. BMW Motorrad representatives climbed up on the podium a total of nine times at the award ceremony in Stuttgart, including twice to the top position.

Model year 2018 will see a number of model facelift measures in the BMW Motorrad programme. The models can be ordered from all BMW Motorrad partners in the new configuration from August 2017.

The BMW GS models powered by the boxer flat-twin engine have been the perfect companion for anyone wishing to explore the furthest reaches of our planet for over three decades. With the world premiere of the near-series test version of the R 1200 GS xDrive Hybrid, BMW Motorrad opens up a whole new chapter in GS history and launches the world’s first series-production all-wheel drive travel enduro with hybrid drive.

The LEGO Technic BMW R 1200 GS Adventure is not just a fun model kit consisting of 603 parts, it is also the result of the successful and creative collaboration between BMW Motorrad and LEGO Technic. So the parts of the LEGO Technic BMW R 1200 GS Adventure can also be used to build the Hover Ride Design Concept. Furthermore, the BMW Junior Company turned the Hover Ride included in the set into an elaborately produced full-size replica.
BMW Motorrad once again sold more motorcycles and maxi scooters in 2016 than ever before. Supplies increased by 5.9 % as compared to the previous year. As of December 2016, a total of 145,032 vehicles (previous year: 136,963 units) were supplied to customers.
A detailed model of the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure developed by BMW Motorrad and LEGO Technic goes on sale from 01 January 2017. The model set – consisting of 603 parts – is the product of close collaboration between the LEGO Technic and BMW Motorrad design teams. Combining innovative design with the art of engineering, it is the first ever LEGO Technic model to be produced in cooperation with a motorcycle manufacturer.
“BMW GS” has stood for universal motorcycling pleasure for more than 35 years: “GS” embodies the ideal combination of touring and long distance suitability, dynamic performance and off-road capability. This applies especially to the BMW GS motorcycles with a flat-twin boxer engine. They are the perfect companions in extreme conditions when it comes to exploring the most remote corners of the earth.
BMW Motorrad celebrated a significant expansion of motorcycle production in Brazil today. The company officially started operation of the new BMW Group plant in Manaus, Brazil, the first exclusive motorcycle production site outside Germany. A total of around 10.5 million euros were invested in the new plant.

Michael Martin has been travelling to the most distant corners of the earth for more than 30 years now and has become the world’s most renowned desert photographer. It was 25 years ago that the qualified geographer chose the motorcycle as his preferred expedition vehicle, actually a BMW R 100 GS, on which he undertook the Transafrica trip from Kenya to Cape Town.
BMW Motorrad has closed the first half-year with a new sales record for the fourth time in succession. 80,754 motorcycles and maxi scooters were supplied to customers worldwide as of June 2016 (prev. yr.: 78,418 units). As compared to the equivalent period of the previous year, this represents an increase of 3.0%. For the first time ever, BMW Motorrad was able to sell more than 80,000 vehicles in the first six-month period of a year.
