The BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet Superbike Team has successfully taken part in the third event of the 2012 Campionato Italiano Velocità at Monza with, as wild-cards, the two full time SuperStock 1000 class riders Sylvain Barrier and Lorenzo Baroni. This event gave the team the perfect chance to prepare for the official FIM Superstock 1000 Cup round, that will take place next weekend at the same track.
Sylvain Barrier obtained a well-deserved victory in today's race, which was his third win from three races in 2012. The French rider, who started from pole and was in second at turn 1, took an early race lead at the following long right hander, the "Curvone Biassono", quickly pulling a big gap between himself and his rivals thanks to a fast race pace. He set a new 1'46.109 lap record for the class and the performance allowed him to ride his own race ahead of the rest to the chequered flag.
Lorenzo Baroni, on the other hand, finished fourth, missing a podium finish by just 59 thousands of a second. The young Italian rider did not get a good start from second place on the grid and he found himself stuck in the middle of a pack of five riders who fought for second to the end of the race.
Serafino Foti, BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet Superbike Team Manager, said:
"This wild-card race at Monza was like a test for us, to prepare for next weekend’s Superstock 1000 round. We're happy with the feedback we got. Sylvain was brilliant to immediately get the race lead and to impose his race pace. Lorenzo didn't get a good start and that put him in fierce competition with riders who held him back, preventing him from reaching the race pace he showed in practice".
Sylvain Barrier #20 - Race: 1st
"I'm happy with today's victory. It was important for me to get a good start and to try to get a big margin in the opening laps, because in the two FIM Cup races I was unable to do so. I'm very confident and looking forward to next weekend. Can't wait get back on track!"
Lorenzo Baroni #14 - Gara: 4th
"It's a shame to have missed the podium by such a small amount. I didn’t get a good start from the grid and that ruined my plan. The continuous position changes didn't allow me to race at my pace. The times I got over the course of the weekend are positive and now we must concentrate for next Sunday".
