The BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike team have scored ten points overall from the second round of the Superbike World Championship 2011. Ayrton Badovini, took to the track as the only rider for the team because of the injury sustained by James Toseland. Ayrton scored points in both races, showing a great improvement in the S 1000RR since the Australian race.
In Race 1, finishing in thirteenth position, Ayrton gained three World Championship points, while in race 2 he was able to get to ninth - ahead of some "works" bikes - after making great progress from seventeenth place on the grid.
Ayrton Badovini said: "I am very pleased with the progress the team has made, although we know that we still have a lot of work to do, especially with regard to the lap times and start. In race 1 we had a number of problems but in race 2, thanks to the changes made, I kept a very fast race pace, even managing to get under 1'30" a few laps from the end. I thank the team for its support and continued belief in me. I hope James returns soon because it’s hard work and I need his input. "
Serafino Foti, sporting director of BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike team, said: "We have made a significant step forward compared to Australia. In this race, unfortunately, we were penalised by our start position. Between race 1 and race 2 we changed the type of tyre and made changes that proved to be the right ones, as Ayrton achieved his best time in the last few laps. I want to thank the team because it did, as always, a great job and we are working in the right direction. Well done Ayrton too because the race 2 improvements highlighted his talent."
Race 1 (temperature 7 ° - 6 ° asphalt): 1, Melandri (Yamaha) 34'33"189 - 2nd Smrz (Ducati) 2" 455 - 3rd Checa (Ducati) 5"839 ... 13 ° Badovini (BMW) 31" 869.
Race 2 (temperature 10 ° - 16 ° asphalt): 1, Checa (Ducati) 34'21"537 - 2nd Melandri (Yamaha) 3"397 - 3rd Camier (Aprilia) 5"902 ... 9 ° Badovini (BMW) 24"298.
Championship Standings: 1, Checa (Ducati), points 91 - 2nd Melandri (Yamaha) points 72 - 3rd Haslam (BMW) points 53... 15 ° Badovini (BMW) points 15.
