Berlin, 10.02.2009. Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, two very
different global leaders were in the limelight at the Cinema for Peace Gala,
this year dedicated to global environmental protection.
Leonardo DiCaprio, the Hollywood actor with German roots, received the
International Green Film Award at the charity gala in the Konzerthaus Berlin.
And Mikhail Gorbachev presented Dicaprio with the award, finding the right
words to recognise the efforts of the popular actor, who takes every
opportunity to raise awareness about the imminent threats to our planet.
Since 2002, Cinema for Peace has worked to promote humanity through film while
inviting members of the international film community to attend the annual
Cinema for Peace Award Gala during the Berlin International Film Festival.
Showcasing cine-matic work that highlights the human condition and human
values, Cinema for Peace has created a platform for peace and tolerance.
The International Green Film Award, presented by Cinema for Peace and BMW,
rec-ognises achievements in the area of film, with a specific focus on the
issues of cli-mate and environmental protection. The award is aimed at
personalities who have made an outstanding contribution in this field - people
like Leonardo DiCaprio. The jury praised his exemplary dedication to the
environment. The 34-year-old has long been a committed environmentalist,
establishing his own foundation ten years ago and producing the documentary
environmental film "11th hour."
"Cinema for Peace 2009 was a great success," said Jaka Bizilj, founder of
Cinema for Peace. "This year we have had more actors, producers, artists and
prominent people from politics, society and culture than ever before. With
400.000 euros raised at the Charity Gala this year, we will be able to support
several international social projects in the coming year."
"Leonardo DiCaprio is a very worthy honouree for the International Green Film
Award. We are very pleased that he has accepted this award in person today. It
shows the high importance attached to environmental protection by Leonardo
Di-Caprio," said Jan-Christiaan Koenders, Vice President Brand Management BMW,
after the prize was awarded by the former Soviet head of state. In addition to
Mikhail Gorbachev, numerous personalities from film, politics and business
attended the event in Berlin. These included: Catherine Deneuve, Diane Kruger
and Sir Ben Kingsley. BMW was presenting partner for the international Cinema
for Peace Gala.
