După trei ani în BMW Junior Team, Dan Harper, Max Hesse şi Neil Verhagen devin piloţi oficiali BMW M

Bucureşti/München. Când BMW Junior Team a avut întâlnirea iniţială la München (Germania) în decembrie 2019 şi apoi s-a întâlnit din nou la scurt timp după primul cantonament de la Formula Medicine din Viareggio (Italia), au existat mari speranţe pentru o repetare a poveştii de succes a legendarul program de antrenament din 1977 al primului program BMW Junior Team, organizat la acea vreme de Jochen Neerpasch. A fost un concept lansat în premieră de Neerpasch în lumea motorsportului. Primii juniori au fost  Manfred Winkelhock, Marc Surer  şi Eddie Cheever, toţi evoluând până la oportunitatea de a concura în Formula 1. Neerpasch a construit mai departe conceptul la începutul anilor ’90, de data aceasta pentru Mercedes, ceea ce a dus la lanasare lui Michael Schumacher în Formula 1. De-a lungul timpului, un alt proiect de promovare a tinerelor talente a fost Formula BMW, cu Martin Tomczyk (ulterior campion DTM), Timo Gloick, Nico Rosberg, Philip Eng sau Christian Vietoris printre piloţii care s-au afirmat aici.

Acum, trei ani după debutul noului BMW Junior Team, proiectul îşi arată încă o dată roadele. Dan Harper (Marea Britanie), Max Hesse (Germania) şi Neil Verhagen (SUA) au fost la înălţimea predecesorilor lor şi sunt  o confirmare pentru mentorul lor, Jochen Neerpasch, astfel că, după ani intenşi de antrenament, au devenit piloţi oficiali BMW M în 2023. Ei vor continua ca echipă şi vor concura în cursele importante, precum cea de 24 de ore Nürburgring (Germania), ca BMW Junior Team, dar promovarea lor în echipa de piloţi oficiali oferă şi noi oportunităţi pentru cei trei.

Şi în acest sezon, la fel ca în 2021 şi 2022, Harper, Hesse şi Verhagen vor participa din nou la emblematica cursă de anduranţă de pe Nordschleife alături de BMW M Team RMG, obiectivul fiind un loc pe podium. În ultimii doi ani, tripleta s-a bucurat de victorii în curse pe "Infernul Verde" atât cu BMW M6 GT3, cât şi cu BMW M4 GT3. De altfel, ei sunt chiar cei mai tineri câştigători ai unei curse NLS în clasamentul general. În 2023, BMW Junior Team va avea şi alte apariţii comune pe alte circuite decât Nürburgring. În plus, apariţiile individuale ca parte a angajamentului lor de pilot oficial sunt o opţiune în viitor. De exemplu, Harper a concurat în decembrie 2022 în "Gulf 12 Hours" din Abu Dhabi (Emiratele Arabe Unite), alături de Century Motorsport. Hesse va participa la cursa de 24 de ore din Dubai (Emiratele Arabe Unite) chiar în acest weekend, iar Verhagen va concura la Daytona (SUA), cu noul BMW M4 GT4, în BMW M Endurance Challenge de la sfârşitul lunii ianuarie. Pe lângă apariţiile la curse, Harper, Hesse şi Verhagen vor fi implicaţi şi în numeroase teste în diferite maşini de curse. Toţi cei trei piloţi au avut deja o implicare importantă în dezvoltarea noului BMW M4 GT4. În rolul lor de piloţi oficiali BMW M, aceştia vor avea şi oportunitatea de a reprezenta marca la diverse evenimente.

Cei trei s-au bucurat de un antrenament intens şi variat în călătoria lor, de la tineri talentaţi la piloţi oficiali BMW M. Cantonamentele regulate de fitness şi antrenament mental cu experţii de la Formula Medicine au fost un element-cheie. De asemenea, a existat o colaborare intensă cu inginerii BMW M Motorsport, diverse echipe BMW M Motorsport şi piloţi oficiali BMW M experimentaţi pentru a îmbunătăţi înţelegerea tehnică a motorsportului. Aspectul de formare a echipei a fost la fel de important pentru cei care conduc programul. Harper, Hesse şi Verhagen şi-au petrecut o mare parte din ultimii trei ani locuind împreună într-o casă comună de lângă Nürburgring, ceea ce i-a văzut devenind o adevărată unitate şi departe de circuit. Cele mai importante momente sportive au fost victoria de clasă cu BMW M4 GT4 la cursa de 24 de ore din Nürburgring, în 2020, victoriile la general în NLS în 2021 şi în manşa de calificări pentru cursa de 24 de ore din 2022, dar şi performanţe puternice în GT World Challenge Europe, inclusiv la cursa de 24 de ore de la Spa-Francorchamps (Belgia), alături de ROWE Racing, în 2022. BMW Junior Team a rulat şi la comenzile prototipului BMW M Hybrid V8 în cadrul testelor.

Like in 2021 and 2022, Harper, Hesse and Verhagen will contest the iconic endurance race on the Nordschleife alongside BMW M Team RMG once again this season with the goal being a spot on the podium. The trio has enjoyed victory at the ‘Green Hell’ in both the BMW M6 GT3 and the BMW M4 GT3 in the past two years. They are even the youngest ever overall winners of an NLS race. The BMW Junior Team will also have joint appearances on tracks other than the Nürburgring again in 2023. Additionally, individual appearances as part of their works driver commitment are an option in the future. For example, Harper competed in the ‘Gulf 12 Hours’ in Abu Dhabi (UAE) for Century Motorsport in December 2022. Hesse will contest the 24 Hours of Dubai (UAE) this weekend, and Verhagen will race at Daytona (USA) in the new BMW M4 GT4 in the BMW M Endurance Challenge at the end of January. In addition to race appearances, Harper, Hesse and Verhagen will also be involved in plenty of testing in various racing cars. All three of the drivers have already been heavily involved in the development of the new BMW M4 GT4. In their role as BMW M works drivers, they will also have the opportunity to represent the brand at various events.

The trio has enjoyed intensive, varied training on their journey from talented youngsters to BMW M works drivers. Regular fitness and mental training camps with the experts at Formula Medicine were a key element. There has also been intensive collaboration with the BMW M Motorsport engineers, various BMW M Motorsport teams and experienced BMW M works drivers to improve their technical understanding of motorsport. The team-building aspect was just as important to those leading the programme. Harper, Hesse and Verhagen spent much of the past three years living together in a shared house at the Nürburgring, which saw them become a real unit away from the racetrack as well. Sporting highlights were the class win with the BMW M4 GT4 at the 24h Nürburgring in 2020, the overall wins in the NLS in 2021 and in the 24h Qualifiers in 2022, as well as strong performances in GT World Challenge Europe, including at the 24h Spa-Francorchamps (BEL) with ROWE Racing last year. The BMW Junior Team also took the BMW M Hybrid V8 prototype for a spin as part of testing.

Max Hesse: "Since sitting in a kart, my dream has been to make it as a works driver for a manufacturer. It’s fantastic to have now achieved that goal. I believe it was a brilliant selection because the three of us have got on really well on a personal level throughout. Whether on the racetrack, at the fitness camps or at our home, we have worked together terrifically as a team and have formed a very close personal bond. I’m very grateful to Dan and Neil for this.
