Munich. With the launch of the MINI Navigation Portable, the first
specially configured mobile navigation system is now available for use
in any model of the MINI range. It was developed by MINI in cooperation
with the well-known manufacturer of navigation systems, Garmin. It is
based on the Garmin 360 model, but is additionally fitted with a safe
cockpit mounting especially designed for the MINI. Unlike other such
units, this navigator is not fitted with a vacuum suction cup, but is
instead mounted immediately alongside the MINI's tachometer. To
match the other dashboard instruments, the navigation unit has a high
quality finish, in the form of a synthetic shimmer surround, which bears
the MINI logo. The instrument can be retrofitted by any MINI dealer,
quickly and simply. The special mounting can be fitted without any
visible cables. After fitting, the MINI Navigation Portable's power
supply is secured via the car electrics. The internal battery is
recharged while the car is in motion. When in external use, i.e.
outside the vehicle, the battery can supply enough power for between
four and six hours' operation. This is sufficient for an extensive
sightseeing tour on foot as well as for a bicycle trip. The new mobile
navigation unit is coordinated for use in the MINI, and this is true
right down to the last detail. The first thing that appears on the
screen after the unit is switched on is the MINI logo. The customised
MINI software contains large-format icons, a menu system that fits the
feel of the brand, a MINI dealer directory, and extensive data
referring to around six million points of interest. The on-screen route
of the MINI Navigation Portable can be displayed in either two or three
dimensions, depending on requirements. The voice function includes
street names, and is therefore particularly effective in ensuring
navigational safety all the way to the driver's destination. The
flexible, lightweight (144.6 grams) unit also features a hands-free
function via the integrated Bluetooth mobile telephone connection, and
it can also be used as an MP3 and audio book player, translator, travel
guide, currency converter, and JPEG photo viewer. Its unusually flat
design means that this mobile multitalent can be conveniently stored in
any jacket pocket. Perfectly in keeping with the MINI philosophy, the
system offers the driver maximum functionality within the smallest
possible space. Another nice touch for fans of the MINI brand is that
the position of the car can be displayed on the screen in the form a
MINI symbol. This symbol can be displayed in a choice of colours, which
can be selected by the driver. If required, the route driven can be
saved and transferred to a personal computer via a USB or Bluetooth
connection. It can be invoked in association with data from the Google
Earth Internet service and the route displayed in a bird's eye view
orientation. The first portable navigation system for the MINI comes
with maps for the whole of Europe preinstalled. The recommended price
of the MINI Navigation Portable is 443 euros in the German market
excluding value added tax (527 including tax) plus installation costs.
