Richmond Hill, ON. BMW Canada is proud to introduce the next generation of its compact rear-wheel drive-based sports coupes, the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé. Striking, extroverted styling, more powerful engine, improved chassis and dynamics, greater interior room and the latest in infotainment and connectivity are just some of the improvements that await the new BMW 2 Series Coupé driver. The new 2 Series Coupé is focused on delivering maximum driving enjoyment, with every component having been optimized for this purpose.
More than 55 years ago, the first BMW 1600 arrived with compact dimensions, a sophisticated chassis and a powerful engine. When the 2002 designation was attached to the 2-door body, a legendary automobile was born. One that provided an unequaled driving experience through a carefully balanced combination of engine, chassis, braking and driver-focused cockpit. In 1973, the 170 hp BMW 2002 Turbo was the first series production European car to feature turbocharging. 2008 saw the arrival of a new sporty rear-wheel drive 1 Series Coupé and 2014 was the market launch of the new 1st Generation 2 Series Coupé.
Exterior Design
The new BMW M240i xDrive model is 88 mm longer, 66 mm wider, 2.5 mm lower and has a 50 mm longer wheelbase than the M240i xDrive Coupé it replaces.
Front and rear tracks are increased by a significant amount – 63 mm at the front and plus 61 mm at the rear. This pays dividends not only in improved cornering prowess but also in a more aggressive appearance.
The BMW 2 Series Coupé’s striking and athletic new exterior design is the first thing that everyone will notice. Three-dimensional surfaces, triangular forms and diagonal lines bring visual power to the front end. The low front bumper, headlights positioned to the outer edges of the front end and the new, turbine-style BMW kidney grille give the car a wide, low-slung look. The prominently flared fenders and a muscular power dome at the centre of the hood give indication of the BMW 2 Series Coupé’s higher dynamic capabilities.
The new performance-oriented BMW kidney grille features vertically arranged air flaps instead of the classic bars. These operate electrically and can open in ten stages to provide increased cooling air when required by the engine. The BMW kidney grille is surrounded by a single-piece frame in cerium grey on the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé. High-gloss black exterior contents are available optionally as standalone or within the M Sport Pro Package. The horizontal cooling air flaps in the hexagonal lower area of the front bumper are also adjusted according to need and help to cool the brakes as well. Air curtains are integrated into the triangular inserts at the outer edges of the front bumper. These guide the oncoming air over the wheels to further reduce turbulence.
The strikingly contoured headlights - inspired by the legendary BMW 2002 models - each have a single individual circular full-LED headlight. The daytime running lights take the form of U-shaped light guides, with integrated turn signals, at the lower edge of the headlights. Adaptive LED Headlights are optional with the Premium Package. As well as responding to steering angle, their cornering light function can also “look ahead” – using data from the navigation system data – in order to illuminate the road as effectively as possible. The Adaptive LED Headlights can be identified by gold coloured accent trim and light guides for the daytime driving light and turn indicators. And the Adaptive LED Headlights are also available with optional Individual Shadowline Headlights which include darkened inlays.
A long hood, short overhangs and a set-back cabin – whose rear section rests on powerfully flared wheel arches – give the new BMW 2 Series Coupé a very athletic appearance. The roofline swoops down from the B-pillar to the short trunk lid which culminates in a pronounced spoiler lip. The clean design language brings extra presence to the extended fenders.
The precisely drawn shoulder line emerging from the headlights extends along the sides to the rear lights. The side windows culminate at the rear in a classical interpretation of BMW’s signature Hofmeister kink. A second, low character line links the front and rear wheel arches. It teams up with the side skirt extensions to give the area around the doors a particularly light and compact appearance.
An aluminum hood and front fenders are used to reduce weight at the front of the vehicle for improved front-rear weight distribution.
Pronounced surfaces at the rear of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé produce an appealing interplay of light and shadow effects which enhances the visual power of the car. Like the compact headlights at the front of the car, the contours of the standard darkened rear lights – positioned at the outer extremes of the rear end – embody a more sporting form. Their surfaces are formed by light clusters with three-dimensional sculpting. This provides a unique showcase for the LED technology. The rear light bars illuminate to produce a new, downward-ending interpretation of the familiar L shape. They border the pentagonal brake light units at their upper edge and to the side. Horizontal LED light guides below the rear lights serve as turn indicators. A rear bumper insert finished in matte black and with integral reflectors underscores the sporting look.
Extending out from the right- and left-hand edges of the rear bumper, the exhaust tips are trapezoidal on the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé. Customers purchasing the new BMW 2 Series Coupé can choose from one non-metallic and six metallic exterior paint shades depending on vehicle specification.
The 6-cylinder BMW M240i xDrive Coupé features an aggressive bumper design with a black front spoiler. The BMW kidney grille surround and side air intake trim come in cerium grey, as do the M-specific exterior mirror caps, the exhaust tips and the model badges. Also standard on the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé are high-gloss black trim elements for the rear bumper inlay and for the side skirts. An M-specific trunk lid spoiler painted in body colour and a black diffuser optimize the airflow at the rear of the car. Above the diffuser, a hexagonal design element reprises the contours of the lower air intake at the front end. Vertically arranged aero extensions with integrated reflectors at the outer edges of the rear apron emphasize the wide and powerful stature of the BMW M model.
Power and Performance
The new 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupé delivers more power and torque, an eight-speed sport automatic transmission with launch control, rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive and a completely revised chassis for exceptional performance and a driving experience unequaled in the compact sports coupe segment.
The new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé’s 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder BMW TwinPower turbo engine delivers 382 hp @ 5,800 – 6,500 rpm and 369 lb-ft. of torque @ 1,800 – 5,000 rpm. An increase of 47 hp and 1 lb-ft of torque over the previous model. The all-wheel drive M240i xDrive Coupé accelerates from 0 – 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h.
Developed using the motorsports expertise of BMW M GmbH, the 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder BMW TwinPower turbo engine powering the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé features a closed-deck aluminum block and an alloy cylinder head. Internal engine efficiency is increased by weight-optimized pistons and connecting rods and a forged steel crankshaft. A twin-scroll turbocharger with indirect charge air cooling integrated into the intake system, High Precision direct fuel injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing for the intake and exhaust sides make up the notable powertrain technologies. The cooling system ensures ideal operating temperatures – both in everyday and during dynamic driving. A split-cooling valve makes it possible to temporarily shut off engine block cooling, thereby optimizing warm-up. The standard M Sport exhaust system provides an emotionally stirring soundtrack.
An eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission is standard in all new BMW 2 Series Coupé. The latest version of the automatic transmission features sharper shift characteristics, improved efficiency, remarkably fast gear changes, very smooth operation and launch control. To optimize the shift strategy for performance driving and efficiency, the transmission’s control unit is able to use route topography data and the traffic situation supplied by the navigation system and driver assistance systems. This allows it to avoid unnecessary gear changes through a quick succession of corners and to shift down early when approaching an intersection or a vehicle ahead in order to utilize engine braking.
As well as gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, this transmission brings a Launch Control function for when the driver is looking to accelerate off the line with optimal traction.
BMW’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system, BMW xDrive, in the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé increases traction, directional stability and agility. It uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case linked with the engine and chassis systems to distribute power between the front and rear wheels as required. This way, any tendency of the vehicle to oversteer or understeer is greatly reduced.
The rear-wheel drive bias of BMW xDrive optimizes both the efficiency and the dynamic properties of the compact BMW M model. In driving situations where all-wheel drive is not necessary, the power from the inline 6-cylinder engine is sent to the rear wheels only. This, plus the M Sport rear differential - standard in the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé - work together to deliver the type of performance and experience customers expect from a BMW when pushing their car to its dynamic limits. The electronically controlled, fully variable locking function in the M Sport rear differential optimizes traction and directional stability, as well as agility and cornering dynamics.
The DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system is used to limit rotational speed equalization between the rear wheels, optimizing the transfer of power to the road. This effectively counters any tendency to understeer when taking corners. Power which cannot be transferred to the road by the unloaded wheel on the inside of the corner – as it is liable to slip – is shifted to the outside wheel, instead of applying the brakes to neutralize its effect. As a result, all of the engine’s power and torque is channeled into providing for a fun driving experience. The fully variable differential can provide a locking effect of 0 to 100 percent. Distributing the torque to the wheels individually also improves directional stability during dynamic direction changes.
Chassis
From day one, the development process for the new BMW 2 Series Coupé was focused on leading the way in the premium compact segment in terms of dynamic performance. Compact dimensions, intelligent lightweight design for the body and chassis, near perfect 50:50 weight distribution and optimized aerodynamics create a vehicle with a true excellent sporting pedigree. The agility, steering precision and cornering dynamics of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé are significantly improved over the predecessor model. Wider tracks, carefully adjusted wheel camber values and an up to 12 percent increase in static torsional rigidity for the body all play a role. While the new BMW 2 Series Coupé exceeds its predecessor in terms of performance, the comfort levels it offers in everyday use remain at the same high level.
A two-joint spring strut front suspension and a five-link rear suspension both contribute to precisely controllable handling in dynamic driving situations and for a high level of long-distance driving comfort. The rigidity of the components used in the two-joint spring-strut front suspension brings even more precise wheel control to the new BMW 2 Series Coupé. The new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé has additional struts supporting the front axle hubs on the side sills. A hydraulically damped tension strut mount minimizes vibration and oscillation. Aluminum suspension arms and swivel bearings reduce unsprung mass. In addition, the five-link-rear suspension helps to ensure precise wheel location thanks to the exceptional stiffness of its subframe and suspension arms. The suspension’s dual-elastic bearing also enhances ride comfort.
The combination of steel and aluminum components helps reduce unsprung mass of the rear suspension. The introduction of a new generation of wheel bearings cuts weight by around 6-pounds compared with the predecessor model. The new wheel bearings also boost the efficiency of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé by reducing friction levels by up to 45 percent.
The lift-related shock absorber technology provides extra damping to control body movement when driving over large bumps and inhibits excessive dive. The system reacts to minor imperfections in the road surface with low damping forces that produce high levels of comfort. The extra damping meanwhile contributes to excellent behavior in corners.
At the front suspension, an additional element that drops down into the inner sleeve of the shock absorber cancels out body vibrations. The lift-related control at the rear suspension employs an additional piston and a tapered inner tube to ensure optimum hydraulic damping, even when carrying a heavy load. Lift-related damping is an active element of the suspension set-up and can be tuned specifically to optimize the balance between sport and comfort. The standard M Sport suspension brings firmer responses for the lift-related dampers and springs.
The Adaptive M suspension, optional on the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé, allows drivers the widest possible spread between sport and comfort-oriented settings. The Adaptive M suspension combines the characteristics of M Sport suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers. Continuously adjustable valves allow the damping force to be adjusted at each wheel individually and as a function of vehicle load. Switching between the various Driving Experience Control modes produces a clearly perceptible variation in the damping characteristics – from the well-balanced long-distance comfort of COMFORT mode through to the highly dynamic set-up activated in SPORT PLUS. The ADAPTIVE setting, the steering, damping and accelerator responses along with the transmission’s shift characteristics are automatically adjusted to suit the driving style. Navigation data can also be used to proactively prepare the car in advance for an upcoming intersection or corner.
Steering, Wheels, Tires and Brakes
The electric power steering systems for the new BMW 2 Series Coupé makes them exceptionally precise. Variable Sport steering is standard on the M240i xDrive Coupé. Variable Sport steering offers a variable ratio which adjusts according to the steering angle, allowing it to provide both directional stability and agile cornering response. Parking and low speed maneuvering require significantly less steering effort while changing between COMFORT and SPORT modes brings a noticeable difference in steering effort.
The M240i xDrive Coupé comes equipped with standard 19-inch M light alloy wheels with 225/40 R19 all-season runflat tires. Available are 19-inch wheels with 225/40R19 front and 255/35R19 rear performance runflat tires as well as 19-inch wheels with 245/35R19 front and 255/35R19 rear performance non-runflat tires.
Powerful lightweight braking systems play an important part in the car’s precisely controllable performance. The standard M Sport brakes provide excellent braking performance and intuitive feel, whether negotiating city streets or pushing hard around a closed course. They feature four-piston front fixed calipers and single-piston rear floating calipers. The calipers, with M logo, are painted blue but can also a red painted finish.
Interior Design
Inside the new BMW 2 Series Coupé, sports-car flair meets a premium ambience that represents a clear leap forward from the predecessor model. The latest interpretation of the driver-focused cockpit design is defined by the driver-focused arrangement and operation of the displays and controls. The BMW Controller, gear selector lever, Start/Stop button, Driving Experience Control switch and numerous other function buttons are grouped within a modern-looking control panel in the centre console.
The design of the interior centres on the engaging driving experience offered by the new BMW 2 Series Coupé. The taper in the roofline, the high centre console and the smooth blending of the instrument panel and door panels create a cocoon-like feel for the driver and front passenger. The Easy-Entry function slides the front seats forward when their backrests are folded, making it easier for passengers to access the rear seats. The contours and integrated headrests of the two rear seats give them an individual-seat character, allowing passengers in the rear to enjoy a sense of sporty driving pleasure as well.
Standard equipment includes Sport seats and a Sport leather steering wheel with newly
designed multifunction buttons. The M240i xDrive Coupé includes an optional moonroof which is 20 percent larger than the moonroof found in the previous model. New Perforated SensaTec in two colours is standard. Optional Vernasca leather upholstery is available in a choice of four colours.
The BMW M240i xDrive Coupé includes a standard M leather steering wheel, cushioned knee pads on the centre console, door sill finishers bearing the M logo, M pedals and an M driver footrest, M floor mats and M-specific displays in the instrument cluster.
The standard dual- zone automatic climate control features independent control of the temperature and ventilation settings for the driver’s side, the front passenger side and for the rear passengers.
Standard ambient interior lighting provides rich illumination of the interior with precision lighting for the map pockets and door panel trim, the door handles, the footwells, the centre console and the storage compartment in front of the selector lever.2
Driver Assistance Systems
The new BMW 2 Series Coupé comes standard with driver assistance systems designed to increase safety and drive comfort. Frontal Collision Warning with braking is able to react to moving and stationary vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. Lane Departure Warning with lane keep assist, which can be used between 70 – 210 km/h, alerts the driver with steering wheel vibrations if they are unintentionally drifting out of their lane and helps them guide the car back onto the correct course with a steering input. The system now analyzes the road conditions more precisely. On extremely narrow roads, the course correction assistance is suppressed so that if a vehicle is approaching from the opposite direction, the driver can easily move onto the side of the road.
Rear cross-traffic alert reduces the danger of a collision when reversing towards roads that are difficult to see into. Now available, Active Blind Spot Detection, alerts the driver to vehicles which are within a critical distance in the adjacent lane or approaching quickly from the rear. The warning takes the form of an illuminating signal in the side mirror.
The standard Dynamic Cruise Control with braking function maintains the desired speed set by the driver while automatically braking, if necessary, on down hills and down to a comfortable speed in corners. The optional Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go automatically keeps a safe distance from vehicles travelling ahead – with a choice of four proximity settings. This system works between 30 – 160 km/h and is capable of braking the vehicle to a standstill and setting off again automatically after short pauses lasting up to 30 seconds.
The new BMW 2 Series Coupé is equipped with a standard rear-view camera and front and rear Park Distance Control (PDC) sensors. The optional Parking Assistance Plus Package
helps the driver to select and use parking spaces either parallel or perpendicular to the road. It can also be used for pulling out of spaces parallel to the road. As well as steering inputs, the Parking Assistant carries out acceleration, braking and gear changes required for the maneuver.
The Back-Up Assistant, included in the Parking Assistance Plus Package, offers the highly convenient automated reversing in confined spaces or situations where the driver does not have a clear view, such as narrow, windy driveways, over a distance of up to 50 metres. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedal and monitor the vehicle’s surroundings.
Additional features in the Parking Assistance Plus Package include Surround View including Top View, Panorama View and 3D View which help to create a 360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings, which is shown from various angles in the control display. The Remote 3D View function gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone.
The optional BMW Drive Recorder, included on cars with Parking Assistance Plus Package, uses the driver assistance systems’ cameras to record video images all around the vehicle, so these can be stored and later either played back on the control display when the vehicle is stationary or exported via the USB interface. It allows the driver to record videos up to 40 seconds in length while driving and in the event of a collision, up to 20 seconds of video taken both before and after the impact (i.e. 40 seconds in total) are stored.
BMW iDrive 7, BMW Maps and Intelligent Personal Assistant
The 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupé features a standard BMW iDrive 7 operating system and interface with a centre 8.8-inch digital touch screen display, analog gauges with a 5.1-inch instrument display, Navigation, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, BMW Digital Key, Advanced Real Time Traffic Information, Connected Music and Remote Software Upgrades.

The latest generation, optional BMW Head-Up Display – available on the BMW 2 Series Coupé for the first time – boasts a very large projection area and full-colour graphics. The information projected by the BMW Head-Up Display includes the car’s speed, speed limits and overtaking restrictions, Check Control messages, status indicators and warnings from the assistance systems, detailed route guidance and turn instructions, and telephone and entertainment lists.
The cloud-based BMW Maps Navigation system delivers significantly enhanced performance and accuracy along with a simplified entry method. Fast route calculations are carried out dynamically and are based on precise real-time traffic data transmitted at short intervals. Drivers can enter any word when searching for their destination. The search results are sorted by relevance with a high level of precision. Alternatively, the destination can be entered by simply saying it.
BMW Maps also uses Connected Parking to aid when searching for a parking space close to the destination. When the driver selects their destination, they receive an indication of the parking situation at the destination for their estimated time of arrival. Shortly before arriving, the driver is given information on the nearest parking garage as well as proposed routes offering a particularly good chance of finding a parking spot close to the destination. The On-Street Parking Information service has been intelligently incorporated into the functionality of BMW Maps.
The latest generation of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant provides a closer connection between driver and car in the new BMW 2 Series Coupé. Naturally formulated spoken instructions can now also be used to adjust the air conditioning. In addition, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is also capable of learning routines that increase convenience, for instance, the driver’s window can be opened automatically when the vehicle reaches a chosen location entered using GPS coordinates, such as the entrance to a parking garage. The system recognizes whether the driver or front passenger is speaking to it and reacts accordingly by, for example, altering the climate control settings on only one side of the interior.
Audio, Connectivity and My BMW App
The 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupé comes standard with a 10-speaker Hi-Fi audio system with 205 watts of amplification. The optional Harman Kardon Surround Sound system increases the amplification to 464 watts and the number of speakers to 14.

The wireless WiFi connection between the smartphone and vehicle enables the mobile device’s operating system to be integrated directly into the car’s display and operating system. Key information from the apps can be viewed both in the control display and – in a cleverly presented way – in the instrument cluster or optional Head-Up Display.
Android Auto™ provides a simple, safe way to use smartphone functions such as music, media and messaging apps. Customers can interact with their smartphone with the help of the Google Assistant and the actions are shown on the car’s information display. Highlights of the interplay between Android Auto and BMW include user-friendly and wireless connectivity and the intelligent integration of Google Maps™ navigation instructions in the BMW Head-Up Display.
The My BMW App is available from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and acts as a new universal interface to the car, providing information on the vehicle’s status at any time. Depending on the equipment fitted, it can enable remote operation of functions, such as vehicle locating, locking and unlocking the doors or monitoring the car’s immediate vicinity (Remote 3D View).
Functions also include the ability to send destination addresses from the smartphone to the vehicle’s navigation system. The My BMW App makes it easier for customers to log in to any current BMW model with their personal BMW ID. For example, the user information and settings stored in the BMW ID can now also be imported into the vehicle extremely conveniently by scanning a QR code displayed on the central screen.
The deeper integration of Amazon Alexa means customers can now use the voice assistant from Amazon in their car in exactly the same way they already do at home. As a result, editing shopping lists, accessing the latest news or playing music becomes even easier. And users can also control compatible smart home devices from the car. Amazon Alexa can be installed in the car in just a few steps with the help of the My BMW App.
The BMW Digital Key enables customers to lock and unlock their new BMW 2 Series Coupé via Near Field Communication (NFC) with their Apple iPhone, making a conventional car key superfluous. Holding the smartphone up to the door handle opens the car. The Digital Key can be set up using the My BMW App. The car owner can share access with up to five other users and has the option of creating a configuration for young drivers which restricts top speed, engine power, maximum radio volume and more.
