When developing a new model at BMW, the overall objective is to bring together
BMW's core values - dynamism, innovation and aesthetic appeal - in one
harmonious, elegant, and progressive concept.

BMW design does not seek to be revolutionary or provocative, but rather
consistently continues a specific design philosophy, taking long-term technical
and societal developments into account. After all, every BMW is built to
emanate that special thrill and feeling of desire for a period of more than 8
years - the average life-cycle of a BMW car.

This makes every new BMW a carefully conceived blend of traditional and modern
style. Each provides an exciting interpretation of family resemblance, while at
the same time ensures that each model retains its own personal character.

Since the launch of the BMW 1600-2 - the original compact, performance-oriented
sports sedan back in 1966 - progressive design development has led the way to
today's fifth generation 3 Series. The self-confidence proudly borne by the new
3 Series shows you at first sight that this is a model with features and
characteristics that have developed consistently over the years, culminating in
exterior design enhanced to the highest level of quality and sophistication.
Both inside and out, the

design of the car is defined by features which give it its unique character,
style and an almost indescribable feeling of lightness and quality.

The young, athletic and elegant silhouette of the car is a result of the
interaction of clear and sleek lines throughout. The dynamic character of the
new 3 Series is accentuated by the longer, stretched lines as well as the
arched design of the roof around the C-pillar with that well-known "kick" at
the bottom.

Through their clear, smooth and accurate lines, the door-seams give this
four-door sedan the character of a coupe. The large wheels, long wheelbase and
wide track provide a broad foundation not only for secure road handling, but
also for a very sporty, muscular look.

The front end of the new car has been re-interpreted, but still remains the
unmistakable face of a BMW 3 Series. The double kidney grille - another
unmistakable BMW styling feature - is integrated into the engine compartment
lid and, together with the dual round headlights behind their new glass covers,
gives the face of the new 3 Series its powerful character.

Another important objective in creating the car's interior was to provide more
room and an entirely new feeling of space for the driver and passengers.
Wheelbase has been increased by approximately 25 mm or .98", which means more
kneeroom and freedom of movement in the rear.

The generous feeling of space is further enhanced by the depth and "lightness"
of the instrument panel. The width of the single-component instrument panel
also helps to provide an even higher standard of ergonomics, as all of the
controls and instruments are in exactly the right position.

Competence in design these days means a lot more, therefore, than just looking
at the practical, functional, artistic, visual and aesthetic features of a
product. Rather, it requires us to carefully consider the ecological and
societal aspects of design.

Quality of design and the right design language at BMW is ensured by Chris
Bangle, BMW?s design chief and his international team of more than 200
specialists based at BMW's Research and Development Centre in Munich and at
Designworks, BMW's subsidiary in California.

Design is not just a purpose in itself, but rather a means to meet strict
-technical demands - in terms of ergonomics and safety, production and
recycling, comfort and individual style. "Design is a complex process,"
explains Bangle. "Many objectives depend upon and influence one another. Some
may even rule out others, such as aesthetic appeal and practical function." BMW
does not see these requirements as a restriction of design freedom, but rather
understands such challenges as an incentive to find far-reaching,
future-oriented solutions.
