A fresh injection of energy for premium electric mobility.
Singapore. BMW Asia and Performance Motors Limited announced the availability of the new BMW iX3, a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) that joins a new generation of electric vehicles from the BMW i brand.
The BMW Group is raising the bar for driving pleasure in vehicles with an all-electric powertrain. As part of the company's electrification offensive, the BMW iX3 has been given a detailed model update which will accentuate the sporting aura of the purely electric SAV with 210kW/400 Nm. The new BMW iX3 now comes as standard with a model-specific M Sport package.
The conceptual and technological connection between the new BMW iX3 and the two other ambassadors for premium electric mobility – the BMW iX and BMW i4 – is also expressed in terms of design by the updated styling of the front and rear end. New controls and additions to standard specification underline the progressive premium characteristics of the new BMW iX3's interior.
A pioneer of fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology.
The BMW iX3 was the first model to feature the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology now also found in the BMW iX and BMW i4. Its highly integrated drive unit brings the electric motor, power electronics and transmission together within a single housing, and generates a maximum 210 kW/286 hp. The motor's power is channelled to the road along the traditional route via the rear wheels.
The high-voltage battery in the new BMW iX3 is also the product of fifthgeneration BMW eDrive technology. Its gross energy content of 80 kWh and the exceptional efficiency of the electric motor enable a range of up to 460 kilometres, as calculated in the WLTP test cycle. Customer surveys and comparison drives by professional independent testers have clearly shown how the new BMW iX3 utilises the high energy storage capability of its lithium-ion battery to achieve an exceptional operating range – in everyday driving and exacting conditions including extremely low ambient temperatures and an extremely sporty driving style – when measured against its segment rivals.
Advanced charging technology enables up to 150 kW of power to be fed into the car at a DC fast-charging station. In this way, it can take on enough energy in the space of 10 minutes to increase its range by 100 kilometres as per the WLTP test cycle. This gives the new BMW iX3 compelling everyday usability.
Flexible vehicle architecture.
The new BMW iX3 is a fully fledged SAV. Its unrestricted everyday usability and sporty, sure-footed and safe driving characteristics are the result of an outstandingly well resolved overall design. It shares the rugged versatility of the conventionally powered variants of the BMW X3, offers generous levels of space for five occupants, has a load compartment whose capacity can be expanded from 510 litres to a maximum 1,560 litres, and brings the allure of locally emission-free driving pleasure to the globally popular premium midsize SAV segment. The flexible vehicle architecture of the BMW X3 makes it the brand's first model to be offered with highly efficient petrol engines, a plug-in hybrid drive system or fully electric drive.
Production of the new BMW iX3 is underway at the BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture's Shenyang facility in China, both for the local market and for export.
Holistic sustainability approach, positive environmental impact throughout the vehicle's lifecycle.
The detailed update for the new BMW iX3 brings fresh energy to the electric mobility arena. As well as leading the way with fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, the new BMW iX3 also displays other parallels with the BMW iX and BMW i4. A particularly important element here is the holistic approach to sustainability that is deeply ingrained in the character of the BMW i brand. The objectives enshrined as part of this approach span the whole of the vehicle lifecycle – from raw materials procurement via the supply chain and production to the usage phase of the brand's vehicles and subsequent recycling – and enhance both environmental and social sustainability.
The amount of the cobalt used in the high-voltage battery of the new BMW iX3 has been reduced by around a third compared with the previous-generation battery in the 2019 BMW i3. The BMW Group has put in place its own procurement process for the cobalt and lithium it supplies to the producers of the battery cells, part of which involves monitoring compliance with environmental and social standards. Renewable energy alone is used both for the manufacture of the battery cells and in the production of the vehicle as a whole. The BMW-specific design principle underpinning the electric motor dispenses with the need for rare-earth metals in the rotor. The extensive use of secondary raw materials in the manufacture of aluminium castings and thermoplastics help the BMW Group to achieve its goals with regard to cutting CO2 emissions and promoting the circular economy.
In the development phase of the new BMW iX3, it was stipulated that the allelectric SAV had to demonstrate a significantly smaller carbon footprint than a comparable, conventionally powered vehicle across its full lifecycle.
Sporting efficiency, BMW i-style.
With its powerful proportions, precise lines and clear sculpted surfaces in the BMW brand's new design language, the new BMW iX3 is every inch the modern SAV – and it combines versatility with hallmark BMW sporting ability and a robust premium character. Colour accents in BMW i Blue, a largely enclosed BMW kidney grille and light alloy wheels with optimised aerodynamics signify the presence of a purely electric drive system and a vehicle concept focused squarely on sustainability.
The characteristic blend of sporty driving pleasure and exceptional efficiency is showcased even more vividly in the exterior design of the new BMW iX3. Updates include a modified design for the headlights, BMW kidney grille, side skirts, front and rear aprons.
Striking appearances, with hints of the BMW iX and BMW i4.
Now more visually striking (in its upper section, in particular), the BMW kidney grille is also larger than before and has a single-piece frame. This comes in Pearl-effect Chrome with a blue accent - in familiar BMW i style – along the inner edges. The inner surfaces of the kidney grille elements have a mesh-like structure and feature a BMW i badge.
The new contours of the headlights, which are around 10 millimetres slimmer than previously, also help to give the new BMW iX3 its visually striking looks. This lends the front end a distinct similarity to that of the BMW iX and BMW i4. Indeed, the parallels between the three latest BMW i models in terms of concept and technology are accentuated even more clearly in their design. The new BMW iX3 is also fitted as standard with Adaptive LED Headlights with matrix function including variable light distribution, Adaptive Headlights and cornering light, plus BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling high beam assistant. Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Laserlight can be specified as an option. At speeds above 60 km/h, the dynamic Laserlight module increases high-beam range to a maximum 650 metres and follows the course of the road. Blue inlays in the L-shaped light elements of the daytime driving lights identify the inclusion here of highly sophisticated headlight technology.
M Sport package now included as standard.
Also helping to shape the dynamic aura of the new BMW iX3 are the design features of the M Sport package now fitted as standard. This package brings a prominently three-dimensional and therefore athletic surface design to the front apron. The lower air intake, which comes with ten-stage active air flap control to cool the drive system components and brakes, has gained in size. The air curtains positioned at the outer edges of the front end are now L-shaped and have blue accents.
The air breathers in the front side panels also have an M-specific design, while the blue accent in the side skirts is omitted. Muscular and aerodynamically optimised surfacing marks out the rear apron of the new BMW iX3. The outer elements of the rear diffuser are in BMW i Blue. The contours of the fully LED rear lights are marked out even more precisely by a black surround. The striking night design is defined by the slim light graphic and now three-dimensional pincer-shaped contouring with delicately integrated, horizontal turn signal indicators.
Aerodynamically optimised light-alloy wheels increase range.
Newly designed aerodynamic wheels in 20-inch format with M-specific styling in Jet black and aluminium inlays are fitted as standard on the new BMW iX3. Their design helps to give the car its low drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.29 and therefore has a positive effect on the all-electric SAV's range.
Driving pleasure and control/operation further enhanced.
The sporting nature of the new BMW iX3 stands out more prominently than before on the inside too. Sport seats are now fitted as standard, while a modern control panel in the centre console and restyled controls in the centre of the instrument panel add to the progressive, premium ambience. The BMW Live Cockpit Professional fitted as standard features a control display whose screen diagonal has been increased to 12.3 inches.
Blue accents on the Start/Stop button – now located in the centre console, the gear selector lever and the BMW emblem on the steering wheel allude to the pure-electric drive system at the heart of the new BMW iX3. Other model-specific cues include the model lettering on the centre console, door sill plates bearing the BMW i logo, elements in the instrument cluster and control display screens reflecting the presence of the electric drive system, and the standard-fitted ambient lighting, which provides BMW i Blue illumination in its default setting.
For intense, focused driving pleasure: sport seats and new controls.
The standard sport seats provide optimal support for the driver and front passenger through high-speed corners. They are trimmed in the Vernasca leather upholstery in a choice of Mokka, Oyster or Black with blue contrast stitching. The now standard M Sport package includes both an Anthracite-coloured headliner and interior trim strips in the new Aluminium Rhombicle dark finish. There is also a choice of three optional interior trim strip variants.
The new driver-focused cockpit layout with perfect ergonomic positioning of the controls helps the driver to concentrate on what is happening on the road ahead. The fully digital screen grouping in the new BMW iX3 is now formed by a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and an enlarged control display that matches its dimensions. The Start/Stop button for the motor is positioned in a new-look control panel in the centre console, where the model-specific selector lever is joined by the BMW Controller and the buttons for the Driving Experience Control switch and electromechanical parking brake.
Attractive equipment line.
The standard "Impressive" equipment package comes with acoustic glazing for the front door windows, Comfort Access, BMW Gesture Control, BMW Head-Up Display, Harman Kardon Surround Sound System and the BMW lconicSounds Electric function. Specially created for electrified BMW models, this simulated drive sound enhances the driving experience by weaving in an extra layer of emotion. The soundtrack produced by the car varies in tone to reflect the selected driving mode.
The new BMW iX3 comes as standard with a Start/Stop acoustic sequence developed as part of a collaboration between composer and curator Hans Zimmer and Creative Director Sound at the BMW Group Renzo Vitale. When the Start/Stop button is pressed, a short composition sets the scene for the electric driving experience in store.
A trailblazer in its segment.
The drive system in the new BMW iX3 delivers signature BMW performance characteristics in consummate silence. The result is a compelling form of driving pleasure, combined with zero tailpipe emissions. The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology comprises an electric motor developed in-house by the BMW Group, the power electronics, highly advanced charging technology and a model-specific high-voltage battery.
The new BMW iX3 is therefore blazing a trail for the latest development stage in electric drive systems at the BMW Group. The fifth generation BMW eDrive technology is highly scalable, meaning it can be used in a variety of vehicle concepts; after starting out in the BMW iX and BMW i4, it will soon be extended to electrified vehicles from other model series as well.
Highly integrated drive system, electrically excited electric motor.
The new BMW iX3 is fitted with a drive unit that brings together the electric motor, power electronics and transmission within a single housing for the first time. This highly integrated electric drive system topology located in the model-specific rear axle subframe allows a substantial reduction in both the installation space required and the weight of the components relative to the power they produce. This has brought about an increase in power density of around 30 per cent compared with the BMW eDrive technology previously featured in electrified models.
The electric motor in the new BMW iX3 works according to the principle of an electrically excited synchronous motor and therefore differs significantly from other solutions on the market. The excitation of the rotor is not induced by fixed permanent magnets, but the feed-in of electric power. This design allows the rare earth metals required for magnetic components to be entirely avoided in the manufacture of the rotor. The latest version of the electric motor also displays exceptional efficiency of up to 93 per cent, as compared to values of under 40 per cent for modern combustion engines.
The drive system can rev to 17,000 rpm, generating maximum output of 210 kW/286 hp early on and keeping it on tap over a wide band. The motor produces extraordinarily high peak torque for a unit of its size, all 400 Nm of which can be summoned from rest – thanks to judiciously managed excitation of the rotor – and is likewise maintained into the upper reaches of the rev range.
The motor's drive power is transferred along the shortest possible path to the single-ratio transmission, which is installed in the same housing, and from there to the rear wheels. In the process, advanced driving stability control technology (including near-actuator wheel slip limitation) helps to sustain relentless forward momentum even in adverse road and weather conditions. The new BMW iX3 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h.
High-voltage battery with high capacity.
The high-voltage battery in the new BMW iX3 is based on the latest Nickel-rich technology familiar from other BMW applications. The lithium-ion battery is composed of 188 individually controllable, prismatic battery cells – each cased in aluminium – which are grouped into 10 modules. The battery is positioned low down in the vehicle floor as an integral component of the body. The new-generation battery has a gross energy content of 80 kWh, of which 74 kWh is utilised, giving it an advanced mass-to-capacity ratio.
The high-voltage battery's excellent energy density, the electric motor's outstanding efficiency, the adaptive recuperation function while on the move, a weight-minimising design and the reduction in the body's aerodynamic drag add up to an all-encompassing sustainability concept and impressive capabilities in everyday use and over long-distance journeys (the WLTP-calculated range is up to 460 kilometres). The new BMW iX3 therefore differs significantly from other electric vehicles in its segment whose range is boosted mostly by the use of ever larger high-voltage batteries. These impact negatively on the vehicle's weight and, by extension, its overall efficiency.
Innovative solutions for charging at home and during a journey.
In Singapore, the new BMW iX3 comes as standard with the BMW i Wallbox Plus and a basic installation package. Combining BMW i design and reliability in the convenience of the customer’s home, the BMW i Wallbox Plus provides a fast way to charge their vehicle. A 4.0-metre charging cable is also provided to enable charging flexibility. Once the vehicle is plugged in, charging begins and will end automatically when the battery is fully charged. In addition, the new BMW iX3 is compatible with all Type 2 public charging stations that are widely available across the island.
BMW Charging, a mobility service of BMW i, gives drivers access to one of the largest network of public charging stations located in various office buildings, shopping malls, hotels and industrial parks in Singapore by using an RFID card that is already enabled for Shell and Greenlots chargers. Payment of the electric current used is made via the RFID card or the relevant smartphone app.
Combined Charging Unit for fast charging at up to 150 kW.
The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) in the new BMW iX3 enables an extremely high level of flexibility when it comes to using charging stations of different types. It therefore makes refuelling the car with electric power a quick and easy process across all international car markets. When using alternating current (AC) terminals, the CCU enables single-phase charging at up to 7.4 kW and three-phase charging at up to 11 kW. Plugging the vehicle into a direct current (DC) fast-charging station allows it to take energy on board at a rate of up to 150 kW.
With the car plugged into a Wallbox, the high-voltage battery in the new BMW iX3 can be charged from 0 to 100 per cent in 7.5 hours. A DC fast charging station, meanwhile, can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 per cent of its full capacity in 32 minutes. A 10-minute charge at one of these stations provides enough power to add 100 kilometres to the driving range in the WLTP cycle.
New features in the My BMW app.
In the new charging area of the My BMW app, all information on the charging history, charging process, scan & charge and the control of charging and climate settings is clearly presented. It is also possible to receive push notifications, e.g. when the vehicle is fully charged. Both in the app and in the vehicle, the visualisation in the form of a blue circle on the map always provides a good overview of the current range.
New news app in the vehicle.
With the recently revised news app, BMW iX3 customers benefit from an improved range of news-on-demand and infotainment podcasts. With the introduction of personalised messages, customers can choose categories in order to receive messages only on topics that interest them. By additionally "liking" the individual posts, the intelligent app gets to know the preferences of the customers better and better and can tailor the news feed more precisely. Personalised news and top news are provided in high audio quality for a more comfortable and pleasant listening experience. Instead of a text-to-speech computer, the content is spoken by speakers. Customers can filter the content by country and language. By integrating additional and large news providers, the news app offers a considerably larger variety of news reports.
Smartphone connection and integration of third-party services.
The BMW Live Cockpit Professional includes optimised smartphone integration, for example via Apple CarPlay. This enables a wide range of digital services such as the Siri digital voice service, various map apps, music streaming services such as Apple Music or the WhatsApp messaging service to be used. The systems are integrated directly into the display and control system through a wireless connection via WiFi between the respective smartphone and the vehicle. The driver can see all the important information from the apps provided there on the control display and in intelligently prepared form in the instrument cluster and BMW Head-Up Display.
With Android Auto™, the BMW Group has expanded its range of seamless networking in the vehicle to include another customer-relevant service. Android Auto in the BMW offers simple and safe use of smartphone functions such as music, media or messaging apps while driving. With the help of the Google Assistant, the customer can interact with his smartphone and the actions taken are shown on the vehicle's info display. The highlights of the interaction between Android Auto and BMW are the convenient, wireless networking and the intelligent integration of Google Maps™ navigation instructions in the BMW HeadUp display.
BMW Digital Key.
The standard BMW Digital Key enables the new BMW iX3 to be unlocked and locked using Near Field Communication (NFC) with the Apple iPhone. The smartphone simply has to be held up to the door handle to open the vehicle. In the vehicle itself, the engine can be started as soon as the smartphone is in the wireless charging tray. The Digital Key can be set up via the My BMW opp. The vehicle owner can also share the access rights with up to five other users, including a configuration option for novice drivers that limits, among other things, the maximum speed and engine power as well as the maximum volume of the radio.
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with extended functions.
The latest generation of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant in the new BMW iX3 ensures a particularly close bond between driver and vehicle. The digital companion, which is activated by voice control (for example "Hey BMW") or by pressing a button, is constantly gaining additional skills. With naturally spoken instructions, the air conditioning can be regulated, among other things.
The use of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is accompanied by new graphic symbols on the control display, which underline the interactive character of the system. The graphic shown now “leans” towards the active speaker and thus visualises the “attention” of the system during speech input. The system recognises whether it is being addressed by the driver or front passenger and reacts accordingly, for example by changing the climate control on only one side.
Driver Assistance Systems.
The progressive character of the new BMW iX3 shines through once again in the exceptionally wide range of functions offered by its driver assistance systems. When it was first launched globally, the allelectric SAV already boasted an array of automated driving and parking functions that have only been introduced in the conventionally powered BMW X3 model variants as part of the latest model update. This further reinforces the pioneering high-tech credentials of the BMW iX3. What is more, it comes with virtually all the assistance systems included as standard.
The driver assistance systems process camera images as well as the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar sensors to monitor the vehicle's surroundings, warn of potential hazards and minimise the risk of an accident with corrective braking or steering inputs. Existing functions are improved by means of remote software upgrades or extensions, in addition, the customer has the option of subsequently booking and installing selected functions via Functions on Demand.
